This is a photo of Ann Allums, also featured in the National Geographic Channel series DOGTOWN, and one of the Vicktory dogs, Denzel. See a video about Dogtown. Knowing what to expect in terms of behavior from your dog while outside in your yard, will help in planning your garden. A hound's enthusiastic howl alerts owners to interesting scents on the wind and possible quarries for the hunt. (Photograph courtesy of Dogscaping. BowTie Press)

There are hands-free ways to discipline your dog in the garden. Besides aversion tactics, such as using noise and smells that your dog will find unpleasant, (see chapter 9 , "The Well-Behaved Organic Dog") barriers sometimes are useful. A Beagle sniffs at the roses that help disguise this hog wire fencing. The dark coloring also keeps the fence from standing out. (Photograph courtesy of Dogscaping. BowTie Press)
